Red wiggler worms (Eisenia fetida) are composting worms used in vermicomposting or vermiculture. Here at the farm, we raise red wiggler worms and reap the benefits of turning our kitchen scraps, yard waste and paper waste into rich nutrient castings.
Red wiggler worms do SO many amazing things for your soil. Not only do they loosen soil and improve aeration, they also eat all the dead organic matter and turn it into castings (worm poop). Worm castings are rich in nutrients and they are a complete organic fertilizer and conditioner for your soil. They contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus that plants need to grow.
Here at the Farm, we use Red Wiggler Worms in a couple of different ways.
Raising Worms in a Bin
1
You can raise your own red wiggler worms. Not only will you reduce the amount of kitchen scraps you throw in your compost bin, but you will reap the benefits of making your own worm castings for years to come.
Worm Castings
2
Use as a top dressing for your soil. Add approximately ½” to 1” of castings on top of your soil. Water as usual.
Soil Preparation
3
Mix worm castings into your soil upon preparation. Ratio mix is 1:4
Worms in the Garden
4
You can throw red wiggler worms in your garden and watch them as they eat all the dead organic matter and add natural fertilizer. Just a word of caution, they may or may not survive our cold winters. You can always dig them up and store them in a container for the winter season (keeping in mind that they still need to eat) and put them back in your garden come spring
Worm Casting Tea
5
Add 1 cup of worm castings to every 4 liters of water. Aerate or let steep (and stir a couple of times a day) for 24 hours. Add to your water can and water as usual. You can also use the worm casting tea as a foliar spray. Add to your spray bottle and spray the leaves of your flowers and vegetables. This will help protect your plant leaves from pests and disease.
